This comment still makes me roll my eyes when I hear it. I mean why is it that if you are black and you don't sound ignorant as hell you are trying to be white!!! I mean I can't get any blacker inside or out!<br /><br />My favorite incident was when I was admired for my ability to pronounce the word ASK correctly. A young man (white man) pointed out the fact that I don't say "axe" instead of ask like some black people do. I was somewhat offended by his comment, I mean....most people who say axe don't even realize it. If you grow up hearing incorrect English or the incorrect pronunciation of words there's a good chance you'll speak poorly and think nothing of it. In particular, I was often told when I was younger that I didn't speak/act like I came from the area in which I grew up. I would ask 'How do you expect me to behave/speak?'. None of them ever told me but I suspect they thought I should be standing in a dark corner waiting to mug someone, speaking in a way that was incomprehensible to anbody outside of my 'gang' or that I should be having a break at Her Majesty's pleasure (in prison).
