  1. Invisible Woman Says:

LMAO at the TD Jakes statement….

But seriously–all of those questions you proposed at the end about being Black don’t apply to me in any way. Does this mean that I thought I was Black all this time and ain’t? hmmmmm…..

  2. Darius T. Williams Says:

I haven’t seen it yet. I’ve DVR’d it so I think this weekend I’ll be watching it.

  3. Anonymous Says:

    One more question:
Does being Black in America make you want to go to a Korean nail salon and get ALL the primary colors put on each and every nail, on both hands?????????????
    Just wondering? SS

  4. Torrance Stephens - All-Mi-T Says:

I don’t follow talking heads folk, jones here wasn’t raised like that. I don’t follow folk, I lead. all I got to say is "work hard and don’t complain"

  5. shea Says:

    lmao at anonymous

    i didn’t watch b/c i don’t have cable.
i was feeling all your points, though
i’m from dallas and td jakes was my pastor so i tried not to laugh at the pork chop joke :D i failed though

i really feel you on the poverty point. while blacks are disproportionally impoverished, there are more whites that meet the poverty criteria. i personally think a lot of what goes on in the world is about class. but because of the disproportionality thing- it looks like we have some real issues…

  6. BabyI'mAStar Says:

OK the issue I have here is that your comments perpetuate the placing of Black women in the category of hoes, whores, loose, sluts etc simply because they choose to have sex. I am single and successful and by no means a “damsel in distress” waiting around for a “Knight in shining armor” or more relevant to my hood a “Captain Save a Hoe” I handle my business daily and expect any man I choose to date to do the same. However, in the dating process, if the time comes when I feel comfortable to take the relationship to the next level, I just very well may choose to do so. It is not about trying to “get a boo, keep a boo or anything of the sort” Hell, maybe I just needed some and wanted some and choose to get some. Women have the right to want a little bit of “ass, head and a good omelet “ when it’s all over with just as much as any man.

  7. AnnaC Says:

I didn’t watch because I don’t have cable… and I don’t need a lesson on what it means to be underprivileged in America…

I just think it would be more fruitful to discuss the historical structures we’ve created in this country to keep people down; then we should take a look at those who broke through anyway; and while we’re at it we should examine what being capitalist necessarily means — then we might be able to discuss what we would like to see in what we call America and perhaps come up with some valid steps to remedy the class issues.

The more difficult the financial times become the less we will be willing to see others’ pain and hurt and work together to make it better — we just don’t do compassion as well as we do envy, blame and denial.

  8. Bygbaby Says:

Invisible Woman – "Does this mean that I thought I was Black all this time and ain't?" LOL!!!

DTW – Looking forward to hear your thoughts!

Suite Suzy – Yes, those nails were a hot mess. Later I thought she go them done fresh for the taping so that she could represent for all the babies mommas.

Torrance – "Competition is for folk who have to prove something to themselves; you don’t need to compete boy if you already know yourself." I love it. very tight post!

Shea – Sorry to talk about your boy but how can anyone preach to anyone about getting themselves together when they are one ham sandwiching from a damn stroke???

MO mom love TD & damn near breaks her neck to go see him when he in in Detroit, has all the books, cd's etc. I say it is too much hype….

"i really feel you on the poverty point. while blacks are disproportionally impoverished, there are more whites that meet the poverty criteria." The flip side of this is that they are still white & can disguise into the larger crowd of privilege with much less as opposed to a Negro who has accomplished & has to struggle to get to middle ground.

Baby I'm A Star – It's been a while boo! OK, you called me out & I have to accept responsibility for my misogynistic tone but it is so out of frustration.

I know that there are many of sisters, such as yourself making things happen alone but there are those out there fucking things up & creating a blanket stereotype.

Yes, women Black, white whatever have needs just like us men Black white or whatever.

But there is a lot of fucking going on, which spreads std's unwanted children, shattered dreams & families. The way that I see it, women need to stop giving up the ass so much & so freely. “Captain Save a Hoe” can be packed a deadly secret in his heat seeking missile.

As for the omlette, I am hoping that I can get one this coming Sunday morning.

AnnaC – "and I don't need a lesson on what it means to be underprivileged in America…" HELLLOOOOO!!!!

if we start talking about history again, white America will shut it down because they cannot handle the horror that may of their forefathers caused. I think the show carefully balanced history & the present well although it could have been deeper but that may have meant a 3 hr program vs ?.?.?

"we just don't do compassion as well as we do envy, blame and denial." So true & I am guilty of that myself!

I am enjoying the discourse so lets keep it going.

  9. Jovan Says:

The wife and watched it and as usual I wasn’t really moved by the program.

I agree that many of the problems have more to do with class then they do race but one cannot ignore the intimate and intersecting relationship that class and race have in America.

Blacks are disproportionately represented in the lower classes and some of that may have to do with systemic racism as well as internalized inferiority complexes.

But that isn’t something the they will show on TV.

The intersection of class and race in America is a more fitting title for the program.

  10. Meikmeika Says:

I was disappointed by what little I saw, Soledad was a bit annoying, asking questions as the panel was still answering her initial question.

I would love to know what percentage of Caucasians tuned into the program…

  11. Torrance Stephens - All-Mi-T Says:

for the record folk: I aint call you out LOL, Besides I know how much time u put into perfecting your craft. You live it by action, I was talking bout them folk on CNN.

  12. Invisible Woman Says:

“how can anyone preach to anyone about getting themselves together when they are one ham sandwiching from a damn stroke???”

    LMAO!!!

  13. Bygbaby Says:

Jovan – Again, another voice of reason! I have been on CNN throughout the day watching the online coverage & they are acting like we just got to America & so much of this news is "shocking".

"Blacks are disproportionately represented in the lower classes and some of that may have to do with systemic racism as well as internalized inferiority complexes.

But that isn't something the they will show on TV." So damn true but they will put on "I Love NY" & other coonish shows (that I sometimes love).

Meikmeika – "…asking questions as the panel was still answering her initial question." That too was annoying!!!

Torrance – Oh, I did not think you were calling me out, I was referring to the reader asking you to do your post. I am constantly getting called out so it is all good!!

Invisible Woman, I had to go there! I know you know what I mean!!!

  14. Bygbaby Says:

One more thing, why is CNN & others making it seem like "BIA" is the best thing for & about Black people since "Roots"?

  15. peacefulgrve Says:

I am trying to give a hand clap for CNN however I am thoroughly insulted that anyone could think that they could squeeze generational success, challenges, disenfranchisement(sp?)rape, disease for a race that has endured for over 400 years into a few days and a few hours?

And if they are real black folk in America they “Hollywood” their stories in order to help make the ratings and get some charity handouts.

Will I watch tonight? nah. I want them to speak about the triflin, immature black men whose mamas beat that ass and they graduated from high school maybe even went to college yet they still aint got their shit together? They aren’t infested with drugs or disease, they have never been incarcerated but they are out here just FOUL on purpose…
    Tell Soledad to find them?

  16. Anonymous Says:

This is my first time reading your blog and I genuinely like it. And I agree with you, they were spreading it on kinda thick in the promos. Lastly, your flowers are beautiful and even bring peace thru a monitor with a privacy screen. I can imagine what they inspire in person.

  17. Lola Gets Says:

    “Look bitches…”

Dang, man, have a heart! Its hard out here for a, um, woman…??
    lol

    That was funny, though.

  18. Luscious Librarian Says:

The second installment was much better and you hit it right on the head about most of those issues having more to do with poverty than anything else.

I think conservatives have been running a smear campaign on black folks or poor folks, I’m not sure, that links being black with being poor. Because of that they can convince poor white folks that their really not that bad off and that if they make good “choices” they’ll get their piece of the pie.

Of course its a lie, but they can stave off a po folks revolution just a little while longer.

  19. Keith Says:

Speaking honestly, if this was a class? I think it might be a Negro 101. We’re talking entry level here. Blackness for beginners. Aside from some updated stats, there was no new ground broken and no new discoveries made.

This means it was obviously made for white people. And the fact that white people still know so little about us that they have to be brought in at this level – if that is, in fact, the case – means that this whole endeavour was a waste of time and space. I mean, if the same show has to be remade over and over for every succeeding generation?

    Damn, Tafari…

  20. brydparker Says:

I don’t understand , why most of you feel offended . I mean what did you think was going to happen when a black man runs for president?

If you look deeper than the surface I really think you can understand the meaning of this !!!
most blacks in this country are never going to be = to whites! No matter how much we are wanting to believe in change ! It is an illusion ..

the revolution will not be televised.

the only thing i would have to say to soledad , is that she is too cerebral for most , if she wants to reach more people she has to dumb it down .

  21. Bygbaby Says:

peacefulgrve – "I am trying to give a hand clap for CNN however I am thoroughly insulted that anyone could think that they could squeeze generational success, challenges, disenfranchisement(sp?)rape, disease for a race that has endured for over 400 years into a few days and a few hours? " Excellent summary! The topics flowed well but it was so surface material.

Anon, Thx for checking me out boo!!!

Lola – Sorry, I was in temporary rant misogynistic rant mode.

Luscious Librarian – I finally saw part 2 I it gave me the same feeling but a little more interesting.

It's almost a week later & I wonder if CNN got what they wanted from the program if not only ratings & accolades from those far removed from the black lives they spot lighted.

Keith – "Speaking honestly, if this was a class? I think it might be a Negro 101." Oh hell no. That was too funny!!!

ByrdParker – "most blacks in this country are never going to be = to whites! No matter how much we are wanting to believe in change ! It is an illusion .." A very true fact indeed. I think we need to give up the quest to be equal to some degree & continue to chart our own course. I know this is easier said than done!

  22. Hijabi Apprentice Says:

Okay I don’t know where to begin with your post. All true and way too funny. You just made my baby kick me for laughing and jiggling his habitat!

I didn’t watch as this kind of cultural tourism tends to piss me off more than enlighten me but I knew that I could come here for a funnier more enlightening play by play.

  23. Peajai Says:

I’m black in America, I have cable, but I didn’t care to watch Black in America. Does that make me a bad Black American??

I also never miss an episode of Project Runway. :)

  24. Peajai Says:

Totally agree on the ass, cash, dignity tip. But it definitely is not just black women that are dealing pussy passes out like cards! I guess CNN would have aired Female in America if Hillary had won the nomination.

  25. DJ Black Adam Says:

I found the series condescending at best…

  26. Richard Bucket Says:

All most blacks care about is instant gratification. No morals, no ethics, no thought regarding the consequences of their actions to others. Just sex, bling, money, dope, sex, more bling, more sex…
