Tafari: I do not know the words but I can hum along if pressed

Bygbaby: Do you the Black national anthem, can you sing it
Tafari: Ummm, yeah!  I know it by heart & can sing it at a moments notice

Bygbaby: Do your kids know either of these anthems?
Tafari: No, but I have thought about teaching them the Black national anthem, I just have not gotten there yet.  No thoughts on the other.
I was on the Field Negro’s blog today & spotted a story about one of my favorite contemporary jazz singers René Marie.  It looks like René was selected to sing the national anthem in Denver for an address given by the mayor of the city.  I will let you see for yourself what jumped off.

When the video started playing, I said OH SHIT!!!!  What we’s gone do now… After she finished her performance, I thought I heard a mouse fart in that room because it got so damn quite.

"A lot of attention has been paid to a recent political performance by noted Denver jazz singer René Marie.

People have called the performance inappropriate.

I don’t know ’bout this one. There is a time and a place for everything, even dissent. But I am wondering what was the point of her making that statement at THAT time to THOSE people? (Can’t spare the 7 minutes to watch her interview right now.)

I am all for individuality and freedom of expression, but I don’t think we always have to be difficult. If there is a reason for her doing what she did, other than she just felt the f*ck like doing it, then more power to her. Otherwise, she is simply “crying wolf.” And when we as a people REALLY need/want to be heard, with stunts like this we can expect to be ignored.

    Just my $0.02.

  2. Bygbaby Says:

Carla – You are on point & it was a stunt! You are right about the time & place but sometimes you have to make the time & place.

I may have not done what she did but I do feel that it was a brave move. Think of all of the Black artists that moved to Europe in the 40’s & 50’s because they got no love here & spoke out against injustice. So I kinda saw it as some kind of homage.

There is some variation in her reasoning based on the interview & published reports so I wonder what the exact truth is.

Like Michelle Martin pointed out, she had to had practiced this before the date so the claim that it just happened is a little faulty.

One good thing that I think came out of this & that is a lot of racists popped out against René. Some of the letters, comments & blogs are just ripe with hate & racist language.

maybe her goal was to further expose the fact that racism is not dead & can be brought to the forefront via song.

    Still mad pros from me.

“If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?”
this might have been the only time in my entire life that i would have actually stood up for the “national anthem”. maybe.
the looks on the faces of the two brothers in the background were hillarious. they were like “hey, wait a minute…that’s our song” and “oh, no…she done ruined it for everybody else now” and “remember, i am on stage…and must keep a straight face”.
then at the end when the rest of the folks were clapping and looking at each other like what just happened here. during the performance a lot of them just looked like we do when the singer goes beyond the first verse of the black national anthem…”hmmm, i never knew that there was more than one verse”.

  4. Bygbaby Says:

Muslimahlocs – OMG, the looks & silence was priceless. I think some where truly clueless as to what was happening.

I for one may have joined in.

I just watched it again & lost it at the end waiting for the ovation.

  5. The Second Sixty-Eight Says:

That was good. I have to say that it was indeed priceless! But she blew though!

I agree with you BB…check out Undercover Black Man for his perspective

  7. Renea Says:

I love “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.” But I don’t think Rene Marie made ‘a statement’ at all. If they invited Celine Dion and she broke out with the Canadian national anthem, she wouldn’t be seen as political but wackadoodle. Rene Marie knew what song she was invited to sing. I think she just offered “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” up to undeserved scorn. It might have been powerful to also sing ‘Lift Ev’ry Voice,” but singing it instead of the national anthem made the occasion rather bizarre. just my opinion…

  8. tamra Says:

I’m with carla on this one…

Things like this tend to a)have the reverse effect of the original statement one might have been trying to make, and b) make people not want to invite/include us in things like this for fear that we are going to do something exactly like this. I’m all for us having a “voice,” but I think there are times/places to take advantage of such situations.

I applaud her for having the hootspa to pull it off…looks like she thought about it for a quick minute before she started.

  9. shea Says:

LOVE this post (i know i’m late as all get out)

and i loved the question you ended with. damn good one!

  10. Bygbaby Says:

    Bygbaby – True but…

Invisible Woman – I tried looking for his post but could not find it. Do you have a link????

Renea – “I think she just offered “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” up to undeserved scorn.” Such a good point!!! The shit was bizarre & I wondered what she thought about as she walked away.

Tamra – “I applaud her for having the hootspa to pull it off…looks like she thought about it for a quick minute before she started.” Maybe she should have thought just a bit longer?.?.?

Shea – He inquiring minds want to know. LOL

    i co-sign with carla.

I, for one, was not even aware of this song, so thanks for posting (remember, i’m not really american, so forgive me). i thought it was totally inapropiate… had i been there, her message and intent would have been lost on me because i didn’t know of the song. to make matters worse, i thought it was beautiful, and the lyrics (from what i could hear) aren’t necessarily “black” oriented, so i wouldn’t even be able to put 2+2 together.

and why come that dude have his hand over his heart? i wonder if, like muslimah suggested, he thought it was a verse he’d never heard?

  14. Richard Bucket Says:

No, you’re dead wrong. You owe us a lot. By benefiting from the incredible freedom we have in American Society that was bought and paid for by the lives of countless patriots before us of ALL races, you are obligated to contribute something positive to society. Stop being a leech on society, or get out. You are blessed to be here, and too stupid to realize it.
