Happy New Year

Author: Tafari, Friday, January 10th, 2014 at 1:56 PM Mindspill

I’m hella late but happy NEW YEAR or as they say in France BONNE ANNÉE! And when is it really too late to say happy new year? 2014 is already off to a great start and I have so much energy; positive energy fueling me. Paris is what I needed to recharge! All I wanted to was to be in a space where I could love, get lost, discover, stroll, people watch, and make connections… All of which, I did and more. I did a fair amount of journaling during my trip and I made some quirky observations along the way such as: - It is quite easy to get into a sticky situation in Paris. - Men seem to not give up their seats to women on public transportation in Paris. I thought it is the gentlemanly thing to do but... - Parisians seem fascinated by Black American music. And dining was a pleasure because of the music. - People really don't trip if you can't speak French but knowing a few key phrases certainly helps. - Orange-ginger-caramel chews basically taste like good sex. The kind of sex that's so good that you call out your own name. Everyone should know this pleasure. - If you get lost while walking, fuck it, just keep walking and consider it an adventure. You'll eventually find your way. - Uneven pavement and sidewalks in Paris are killer on my ankles. - When you see a group of gypsies, do not make eye contact with any of them and protect your pockets. - Many African women in Paris love scary looking drawn on eyebrows. - Paris is the city that sleeps. If you’re out past 12, be prepared to hunt hard for a cab or walk. - Strolling down the Champs-Élysées while listening to “Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe” is pretty awesome. - Enjoy with passion all that you want. Love… Art… Exploration… - It’s OK to let go of the things that complicate your life. - You’re never too old to make new friends in strange dark places. See a few photos from my trip here.

Fashion Mindspill

After my time at New York Fashion Week last February I decided to sit the fall season out New York Fashion Week out. Crazy right??? Although I will not be in & out of fashion related events photographing beautiful people, I did have some thoughts on fashion week that I shared with Sharifa D. Crawford of Disciples of Haute. Check it out here! And for the record, I'm never that excited about spring/summer collections. Being from the Midwest & a lover of all things autumn, I'm more excited about fall/winter collections. The colors, jackets, richer textiles and scarves of course.

To Tafari…

Author: Tafari, Friday, August 23rd, 2013 at 1:27 PM Mindspill

Wednesday, I was having a pretty good but busy day.  After the 9-5, I hit the gym to relieve stress and continue my workout plan…  I’m almost at my 2nd weight loss target of losing 15lbs before my birthday. Just 3lbs shy and I have 3 weeks before the big day! While I was between sets, I decided to take a mini break and check my Facebook. Soon as the app opened, I saw a post from Sava’s Restaurant, one of my favorite places in town! They have one of the best happy hours around and the bar staff are like friends, but friends who know how to craft a really good cocktail (especially Chapin & Lerone)! And I won’t even go into how awesome their Bacon Brie Burger is….. Anyway, as you see from the screen shot above, the post the other night was announcing a new drink special named after me.  I had to read it a couple times because I was like what??? This small bit of news was a cool boost for the day.  I requested this drink the 1st time I visited Sava’s and it has been on since then. The “To Tafari” is Hennessy, Domaine De Canton (ginger liqueur), ginger beer and lemon. I had no plans to have a cocktail out this week but I could not resist after seeing this. How could I? As soon as I walked into the restaurant, I was greeted in the best way. And apparently, the drink was selling well. It was so funny & a great way to end my evening! On my Facebook page, I posted this: “Now that I've been featured in the New York Times as a style icon, had a drink named after me in a celebrated restaurant in Ann Arbor, I'm not sure what to do with myself.” The responses were hilarious to say the least.

Red Hot Shoes

A good pair of church shoes is a necessity in my life. I wouldn't consider myself obsessed with shoes but I spend a fair amount of time searching for styles and looking at trends. My research is aided by having Pinterest to host a collection of some of the hottest kicks that I stumble upon. One of these days, I will own them all! If you're into shoes like I am, check out and follow my "Shoegasm" board on Pinterest.

Bygbaby Cooks: Bloody Good Martini

Author: Tafari, Monday, February 25th, 2013 at 9:10 PM Mindspill

Like a food nerd, I got excited when I went to the market & found blood oranges in the produce section. Blood oranges happen to be one of my favorite citrus fruits. Not too sweet, super juicy, and fun to look at. When you slice one open, you never know what you will see. The flesh of the fruit can range from dark orange to dark red. I was having company for dinner the other night and was going to keep it simple with wine but since I scored the blood oranges, I decided to have some fun and do martinis instead. Mindspill

Ingredients - 3 oz fresh blood orange juice - 3 oz Tanqueray Gin - 1 oz St Germain (elder flower liqueur) Add  your liquids to a shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously. Strain and pour the refreshing concoction into a chilled garnished martini glass and enjoy. This mix is enough for two drinks. If you’re in the market for a great citrus juicer, I HIGHLY recommend the Breville Citrus Press. I found one on eBay as a refurb a few years ago via Breville and it is one of my favorite kitchen tools.

American Dreamer

"Martin had a dream! Martin had a dream! Kendrick have a dream!"
I’m back after a wonderful whirlwind visit to Washington D.C. I copped tickets to the inauguration but guess what... I didn’t make it. We decided to stay in & stay warm after flashbacks of the frigid temps from 4 years ago. We were able to catch the Inaugural parade however and that was fun! Otherwise, the trip was relaxing & I enjoyed the time with my friends. After several games of dominoes, exotic libations, a boxed wine scandal, & partaking in a large fruit basket, it feels great being back home! Here are a few snapshots from my lovers stroll around the capital. Basic but sexy of course! You know how I do. Mindspill Mindspill

Bygbaby Cooks: Cumin Lime Carrots

Author: Tafari, Sunday, December 16th, 2012 at 4:48 PM Found these carrots on Pinterest earlier this year & they are one of my favorite things to snack on. Very easy to make & super savory. Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 lb Peeled baby carrots
  • 1/2 cup Fresh lime juice
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • Fresh pepper
  • Crushed red pepper
  • Coarse sea salt
  • Scallions
  • Cilantro
The Jump Off: Preheat your oven to 350º. Add all of your wet ingredients and cumin to a bowl and mix until fully combined. Toss in the carrots and coat them. Season with a little fresh pepper and coarse sea salt to taste. Add crushed red pepper to taste. This bit of heat adds a nice counter punch to the sweetness from the carrots/honey & acidity of the lime. Add the coated carrots to a baking dish or oven proof pan being sure to add all of the remaining juice. Bake for 25 minutes or until tender. Toss carrots, garnish with cilantro, and scallions. Allow to cool and serve. Side note: The 1st few times that I made this, I had a lot of juice left over, I drained it and reduced it in a saute pan then poured the reduction back over the carrots. This added a very nice concentrated flavor punch!

Perfect Accessory: Scarf Game

Author: Tafari, Friday, March 16th, 2012 at 12:28 PM Mindspill

My homie Fave sent this to me yesterday & I just about died! Everybody knows that I love scarves. And I love BIG scarves. Art has imitated my life and this is so damn awesome!
"Whether it’s to protect their voice or make a fashion statement, it hard to find a soul singer these days that’s NOT wearing a decorative scarf around their neck. APNF and crew are faithful soul music lovers and follow the trends faithfully…this time to a fault. heh. Step yo’ scarf game up, people."
