Let Me Pick Your Afro Baby

Washing Sade’s hair is always a back breaking task that leaves me exhausted. Luckily, we only wash it every three – four weeks when she is between twists.

This morning, after I got my mind right, we washed & blew dry her afro in preparation for her appointment to get fresh kinky twists before the start of school.

When I was done blowing it out, she was amazed to see how long her hair had grown. So was I because she has an AWESOME afro.

I tried to convince her to rock the afro to school for a week but she refused.  She said that most of the Black girls at her school work relaxers & that she one of the very few girls that wore natural hairstyles.

I told her that she had a leg up on them because she was working with nature & nothing can beat that. She was like whatever; I still want a hot press not a perm but a hot press.

Just maybe for her birthday next year, I will soften my position on hair straightening. Just maybe she will get that hot press.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to photograph friend, radio host of Cocoa Mode (XM169 The Power) & DMV area yogini; Shawna Renee.

Shawna & I met 2 years ago when were both in my BFF’s wedding & we’ve been friends ever since. Actually, I was a fan before I was friend but that’s a long radio listener story.

Anyway, Shawna was in need of some new photos for some exciting new projects, so she hit up yours truly.

My original idea for a photo back drop feel through like a mutha. It’s amazing what how 3 locked doors can destroy plans.

Fortunately, Shawna, was very flexible so we made a quick revamp & the rest is history. During our session, we set up shop on the Detroit River Walk, Millender Center & the Dequindre Cut. It was a quick, sweaty & thirst filled 3 hours.

I’m not sure who said photography was easy because it sure is not! With that said, I’d like to send a special shout out to my baby Olivia who assisted me during the shoot.

One of these days, when someone writes my autobiography, I will talk about how I got Shawna to do the butterfly & why she rode my back during the shoot. It’s about that hard work I was just talking about.

Anyway, I’m tired & need to sign off. The weekend was AWESOME but now I’m feeling it.

I met Danielle on Twitter (@vivrant_thang) many months ago & had the pleasure of hanging with her twice while in DC along with many other of my Twitter and blogging friends.

The next time I see Danielle, she will have a head filled with Sisterlocks, so I took this opportunity to photograph her in all of her Afroed glory.

So nice to see Black women embrace their naps!

And I’m officially considering this image as the beginning to my nappy hair photojournal!
