It Has Begun: New York Fashion Week

Author: Tafari, Friday, February 10th, 2012 at 11:34 PM Mindspill

I have completed 2 days of fashion shows around New York and Im asking myself, what did I get myself into. Feet hurting. Back hurting. Tired of running up & down subways stairs carrying a 60 pound bag. Tired of waiting in line. Tired of standing. Tired of looking at janky ass fashion wanna bees. ect........ But even with all of the bitching that I just did, I am having a great time overall. I've seen some good fashion shows. Have been able to link up with friends. Best of all, I've been looking great. I'm just saying... I'll post links to blog posts and images as time permits so please stay tuned! The photo above was captured at Nicole Miller's 2012 fall/winter this evening. I guess big hats are making a comeback because they've been seen in a few shows. I think I'm feeling the look. As always, you can get updates on my goings on on Facebook & Twitter. Holla!!!

On Seeing Korto Momolu

Author: Tafari, Sunday, February 5th, 2012 at 10:43 PM Mindspill

Most invitations to New York Fashion Week shows are quite mundane to say the least. For the most part, they do not get me excited, make me want to RSVP or know more about what’s going to be shown. Yesterday, I got this HOT image as part of a fashion presentation invite from designer Korto Momolu. You may recall Korto as being one of the designers on Project Runway who was robbed by the judges when it came to the big prize. Yeah, I know that it’s been years since season 5 of the show that I love to hate but I am still mad about it. Anyway…… I will be at Korto’s 2012 fall/winter show next Monday to photograph the goodness that I know she will bring… As an added bonus, it is quite possible that I will run into Heidi Klum whom will be at Korto’s show filming “Germany's Next Top Model.” Stay tuned…. On a side note.... This photo stirs my soul! The tones, the lines, the everything. I wish I knew who the photographer was. Image credit: Korto Momolu / Photographer unknown

NY Sip & See

Author: Tafari, Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 11:42 PM Mindspill

Everybody knows... that no trip to New York City is complete without having a Sip & See! I've been in countdown mode since yesterday! Counting down the days, hours and minutes left before I board that plane for New York to do my Mercedes Benz Fashion Week work. Oh and fun and museums and hopefully at least 3 good meals. Oh and hopefully some mental downtime. The Black spirits know that I need some mental downtime! Lastly, about this time next week, I will be arriving back at my hotel to get some rest & HOPING that I don't twist my ankle again like I did last September just before heading to my first show of the season. Just in case, I will be carrying an Ace Bandage!!! If you're in NYC, consider this an invite & hope to sip with & see you at the Thom Bar!

The Perfect Team Member

Yesterday, I spent the evening with Cousin Dee, (my photography soul mate) going over my workflow processes for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.  Why? Because she will be assisting me this upcoming season! I am pretty damn excited about it too. I have been trying to make this happen for the past 3 seasons but something always came up. And while we discussed the workflow & my high quality expectations, we also discussed self-defense techniques, when & went not to elbow someone & when to cuss a mutha out. Just 10 days before I hit the city that I love to love with one of my bestest friends on THIS planet. You will be able to follow our exploits on Twitter here: Photosbytafari VerlisaLisaDee

Photographer on the Scene

Author: Tafari, Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 at 10:30 PM Mindspill

When at Lincoln Center during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, you run into many fashionable people out and about near the fountain. Many are there to be seen, many are there to work but most are there working it. And like anywhere, some just don’t do it well, especially some of the photographers. In this case, I spotted photographer Megan Graham working it while working as she snapped photos of the fashion savvy for Stylesight. When I saw her working, she reminded me of a summer breeze. She looked cool, yet warm. Maybe, it was her fair glow, soft curls & that 70s dress. Maybe it was her smile… You know that I am a sucker for a beautiful smile. For the record, I never look fashionable when at Lincoln Center. Typically, I look like a mess but I am always working it. You know how I do... Celebrity Stylist: Phillip Bloch

Author: Tafari, Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 at 12:01 AM Mindspill

The great thing about NYC is that you never know who you will run into on the streets. Celebs, celeb stylist, stylist, style icons… Especially during MBFW I bumped into noted fashion stylist Philip Bloch last September chopping at the Lincoln Center Fountain. I pointed my camera at him & said give it to me. And here we are. Thanks for being a sport Phillip! Check here to view more of my NYC Analog Street Portrait series.

Life Stress & Runway Bitches

Author: Tafari, Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 at 7:00 PM Mindspill

I’m 6 weeks away from the end of my 2nd to last semester at Eastern Michigan University. I’m waist deep in course work. I have 3 big photography assignments happening next week. I’m in an art show in 5 weeks, so I’m trying to pin down what I will show (stay tuned). I have family drama (don't stay tuned). I’m caught up in a new big project on my “real job.” I’m basically stressed the fuck out. But, I’m still smiling. Why? Cause a brother has to keep his eye on the prize(s). Today, I was looking at the calendar & realized that Mercedes Benz Fashion Week registration opens 3 weeks from today & I got a little excited.  I started mentally planning for a great but busy time in the wintry world of NYC next February. This is one thing that gave me a light moment today! Mark, my words, by the time that Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I’ll be stressing over almost being out of vacation time.  Guess I need to slow my roll.

Looking After 5 Before 5

Author: Tafari, Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 at 10:29 PM Mindspill

It was about 1pm when I saw her. I was like OK, she’s totally looking after 5 but it was NYC, anything goes… After the dress, I saw the brows. OK, maybe they were for the drama. But that wig though… It was NYC & anything goes… Check here to view more of my NYC Analog Street Portrait series.

It’s a Wrap: Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

Author: Tafari, Friday, September 16th, 2011 at 9:11 PM Mindspill

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is officially over & I survived the madness for five days…. This season for me was the best of the three that I have attended for one major reason & that is because I refused to let anyone or anything stress me out. This means that I got into no arguments with Italian photographers, I didn’t have to elbow anyone & I did not have to cuss anyone one out. On the way home, I thought about how calm & reserved I was, which is totally not me. Although I did not stress like in the past, I did have my fair share of incidents that were challenging such as:

- Twisting my ankle the 1st day of MBFW. A total bummer considering that photographing at MBFW means lots of walking & standing. When the accident occurred, honestly, I could have cried. It hurt like never before & walking on it was a bitch! A week later, the ankle is feeling better but not 100% so you know that I really messed myself up.

- Having my Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens die on me stemming from a drop months ago during a photo session. I noticed that it died moments before I was about to photograph the Lacoste runway show. In order to make it through the rest of the assignment meant procuring a replacement lens fast. Luckily, I found a replacement at THE only open camera store on Manhattan. I so did not plan on getting a replacement lens but I have to say that the updated version of the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is far more superior to its predecessor. Much faster, lighter & much more crisp. I guess it all came together…

- Losing my laptop charger. Luckily, the 5th Ave Apple store is open 24 hours!

- Missing several runway looks in six shows because my rental Nikon D700 camera mirror kept locking up on me. Fortunately, I keep a back up camera. And even better, when I returned the camera to Foto Care & informed them of the issue, they totally took care of me in a way that I did not expect. They have the best service and I appreciate their commitment to photographers.

- Losing my Metro Card on the last day & almost missing my flight after busting a cabbie who tried to rip me off by double charging.

Outside of the drama, I worked my ass off photographing twenty shows/presentations, processing and uploading images the same day & being in the bed by 1am. Mindspill Making my turn around time even better was the fact that my editor, Asia Willis and I were coordinating via phone, text and email as she was in LA whipping up our reviews over the weekend and posting on the spot. Technology is a beautiful thing! Without the company & humor of my friends in New York with me, I don’t know if I would have been able to stay sane because after the ankle, I was like, OK. After the lens, I was like, REALLY?!!!. After the camera, I was like, I must have a Gypsy curse on my life (as I screamed loudly in my head)… Mindspill On an interesting note, my friends at The NYLA Report and I are already talking about MBFW in February as we continue to wrap of our coverage from the past week. It’s not that far away & we are going to be bigger & badder with fingers crossed for less drama or at least some fun drama! Speed Skater: June Ambrose

Author: Tafari, Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 at 9:14 PM Mindspill

I caught up with celebrity stylist & soon to be reality star (VH1), June Ambrose Monday at Lincoln Center rocking some funky "shoegasmic" ice skate inspired heels. Filming is going on now & more details are forthcoming on her show. Stay tuned to my friends The NYLA Report who recently interviewed June... While June & I kicked it briefly about Nicki Minaj (hot ass mess!) who was spotted at the Carolina Herrara show with Anna Wintour of Vogue magazine, it was hard not to notice how passersby were digging on June's look (peep the chick in the background). As we parted ways, I said "see you in February" and she laughed! June is my Fashion Week boo!
