Changing The Stock Game

Author: Tafari, Thursday, March 6th, 2014 at 11:04 AM
Getty Images just announced that blog sites now have access to post their images via an embed at no cost at all. Like free 99. I was shocked! Will this stop thieves? Will this help sales/promotion? How much will content creators rejoice?
"For the past decade or so, the best defense Getty Images could find against the right-click button on your mouse—home of the “copy” and “save” functions—has been a team of scary lawyers. By copying one of its images and using it on your blog, you’re entering a random drawing where the prize is a terrifying letter offering a tutorial in copyright litigation." Bloomberg Business Week "What we're trying to do is take a behavior that already exists and enable it legally, then try to get some benefits back to the photographer primarily through attribution and linkage." Craig Peters, senior vice president of business development, product and content at Getty Images
Everybody knows that Gil Scott-Heron is one of my heroes and I have always loved the photo above, which has been posted using Getty's new free embed option. The cool thing is, I have an image to share, it can be cross-promoted via social media with the Twitter & Tumblr (I hate Tumblr!) buttons, & most importantly, it is properly giving credit to the photographer. By embedding, users accept Getty Images' terms which strictly limit use of the images in the following ways: - Non-commercial, digital use only. - Content embedded in the embedded viewer cannot be used outside of that context. - No defamatory, pornographic or otherwise unlawful use. It will be interesting to see how this program will go and if it will decrease any photo snatching.

I get requests often from agencies, individuals etc asking me for permission to use my photos for various projects. More often than not, the request come with the following line "I don't have a budget but will give you credit." When I read that bit, it's a wrap. I don't need credit, I need cash! Why are people so crazy to think that I will offer free product for them to use to get paid off of? Maybe I'm the crazy one? Yesterday, I got the request below from architecture firm, Diller Scofidio + Renfro & I started to cuss when I read the last paragraph! See for yourself:
"Dear Tafari Stevenson-Howard, I am contacting you from Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the architecture studio that designed the Lincoln Center Redevelopment in New York. We are currently designing a book in collaboration with Lincoln Center covering our work on the campus from 2003 through the present. The first edition will be a run of 5,000 books, with an expected publication date of December 2012. We have found that the Revson Fountain at Lincoln Center has been a focal point for pictures posted online and we would like to feature this phenomena in our publication. We are interested in one of your images of the Revson Fountain on Flickr and would like permission to use it in our book. The image would be small, approximately 2" x 1", alongside images by other Flickr photographers, and we are requesting the reproduction authorization of this work. It is found here: www.flickr.com/photos/bygbaby/6952930643/?? The book is being produced in house and due to our limited budget and the limited run of books being produced, we are unable to provide you with pay or a copy of the book. If you do allow us to use your image could you please provide me with how you would like to be credited? We look forward to your reply, with kindest regards. Sofia Balters"
My was response was:
"Hello Sofia, Thanks for inquiring but I am not interested. The time, effort, creativity energy and cost of my camera equipment that I used to create this image is worth more than photo credit. I'm an award winning photographer, Getty Images contributor, style icon and US citizen that has bills to pay. Should you be interested in purchasing this photo, I'd love to talk more. And yes, this offer is insulting! Best, Tafari"
Who are these people? And did they Google my name before they sent that request?

Rejection Doesn’t Last Always

Let me start here - I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit! -------------- Prior to becoming a creative Getty Image contributor via the Flickr Collection, I had dreams of becoming a regular contributor though their “normal” application process.  I actually started the application process then got all nervous and backed away. Finishing the application process remained on my mind for many months but I was afraid of being rejected and honestly, at that time, I was not all the secure with what I would submit. Months after I kinda said, "I’ll just wait," I received an email from Getty Images inviting me to join their Flickr Collection.  I had to read that message a few times to make sure that I understood it correctly.  That was back in February of 2009. Since then, I’ve added over 100 images (small number) to the collection & have been lucky to get sales every month with some months being really GREAT. Because of the success that I was having with the Flickr Collection, I said that I was backing away from iStockphoto where I had been contributing images for a while. The decision to walk away from iStockphoto was because, the royalties are low & I was basically getting no sales. For instance, over a 3 year period, I made maybe 100 bucks.  The stock photography thing is a total crap shoot. You may win, you may win a little bit or you may just lose. With iStockphoto, I just lost & that was OK. Since I was losing, I started to remove my images from their site and concentrate on getting more on Getty Images. While I was in NYC for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I got an email from the Getty Images Flickr Collection requesting me to add 30 more images to the site. I was pretty geeked about that. Now back to me applying to become a regular contributor… Back in April of 2011, I completed my application, sent in test images & uploaded model releases in hopes of getting that email welcoming me to the family. Thirty days went by; no word. Sixty days went by; no word. I decided to email asking for a status update & got a canned response saying that they were swamped and that someone would get back with me. No one ever did. Last week, I decided to send another status update request & got this:
“Dear Tafari, Thank you for your interest in Getty Images. Due to the high number of image submissions we receive, we cannot respond to all applicants. If after the 60 day period you have not received mail from us, this means we have reviewed your imagery for our Creative Stills Collections and unfortunately, after careful consideration, your portfolio has not passed our requirements. As an alternative, you may wish to consider submitting your images to iStockphoto, which accepts a wider variety of file sizes and formats and has excellent resources for adding to your skills…”
When I read it, my jaw dropped & I was just like damn. Why? - My skills, quality and talent obviously is Getty worthy, hence the continued success with one of their collections. - I’m so done with iStockphoto - I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit. I’ve been rejected before and I’m a big boy so that’s not a problem. I think the iStockphoto referral is what threw me. I’m like ughhhh, I’m so past them. But… I have to say that as a designer, I often use iStockphoto because there is some great work there. The option just does not work for me as a seller with them. Oh me & my 1st world problems….

About Last Night XV: Private Room

So, I was invited to this party at The Box in SoHo a few weeks ago.  The people that I thought were going to be there were not, so I was in a room full of beautiful strangers, musicians, models, shit talkers, socialites and a few coke heads (this is another story though). Luckily, I did have a plus one so my good friend Special K joined me later in the evening. As I waited for Special K to arrive, I found this little private room that had a stripper pole, a disco ball, a Victorian couch, two super comfy armchairs and this lamp. It didn't smell like a "Champagne room" but it certainly had all of the makings. When Special K arrived, we chilled in the room with our cocktails talking & laughing it up. As we chilled, two girls from Romania came in to join us. They were a little hammered from the free booze. After being in the room for a short while, one of the girls jumped on the pole & did some tricks. Her friend jumped on after & she was working it. I was like this is a going to be a night.  After the two girls had their fun, they encouraged Special K to jump on the pole & she did reluctantly. Not too long after, security came and put us out. As we were leaving, I jumped on the pole for shits & giggles. A) I’m too big for that shit. B) Mad props to all women who can work the pole C) I cannot believe that I told you that I jumped on the pole. My life is an adventure... And I like red lights.

This ceviche was prepared by me. I shopped for the fresh ingredients. I sliced that avocado to perfection. I styled the plate. I took the photograph. I ate the ceviche. I processed the photo. I posted to photo to Flickr so that I could share my recipe and image with friends and admirers. This all took time, energy & most of all, $30 for a piece of red snapper. OK…. ----------------------------------------------------- Today, my pissedoffness with Air Canada Vacations has ended after having a discussion with their marketing director; Manon LeBlanc. I actually left a voicemail for a call back this morning & was happy to get a response this afternoon.  Evidently, my web campaign to spread this hot mess was successful because this story was circulated by Air Canada’s PR department and beyond. Since yesterday the post has nearly 300 hits. Yeah, I put it on blast here, my FB pages, Air Canada’s FB page, Flickr & Twitter. I’m happy that the post spread because I think it’s important for photographers who grind like I do in this craft to know that our work has value & we need to claim that! Anyway, here is the rub… Manon apologized for Nick’s unprofessional attitude and response. She also informed me that he is a 17 year old college intern working an unpaid 2 week assignment.  Until Nick encountered me, he was used to getting the photos that he inquired about. I guess you could say that he was really feeling himself before he ran into me. I’m cool with the apology & can somewhat process Nick’s behavior. On the photographer piece, Manon mentioned that Air Canada Vacations has been successful in procuring images from Flickr users in the past at no cost while providing credit.  They have also encountered Flickr members such as myself who know the value of their work is worth more than a byline.  In these fuck you, pay me instances, Air Canada Vacations isn't a position to pay for a photograph because they don't have a photography budget. In fact, they have and will change the focus of their story(s) if imagery cannot be obtained for .free99. I’m tripping on the fact that they are able to fill a 300 page publication with free images. I mean, it takes a real marketing pimp to snake charm a photographer with photo credit only as the company gets paid by clients/passengers booking trips in addition to advertising dollars that they get through the publication. Seems like the sky is falling or some crazy mess because more often than not that companies, groups & individuals need imagery but have no budget. During the conversation I stated that it MUST be known that just because a photo is posted on Flickr does not mean that it is some random snap shot. In fact many of the photographers on Flickr are professions, semi professions and highly skilled photo enthusiast. I refuse to play a part in that game. The gas is too damn high! Lessons learned:
  • Sometimes you have to cuss a bitch out
  • Standing your ground keeps you from being taken advantage of
  • Social media is a wonderful platform to spread information rapidly
  • I love telling people to “Google my name & do my resume.”
  • I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit
Lastly, I am thankful for Air Canada Vacations reaching back out to me to smooth this out & I hope that Nick uses this interaction as a workplace learning example on how not to wild out. And no, they did not buy the photo, offer me a free trip, but they did Google my name.

Fuck You, Pay Me

I’m contacted often from companies who are interested in purchasing work of mine that was spotted on Flickr.  I have been lucky to have to make some sales independently, some sales were done via Getty Images, and other times the potential sale fell through the cracks because the would be client wants the imagery for free with the promise of giving me credit. I have been past the “I’ll give to credit” shit for years. And of course you should give me credit because I’m giving my work to you. Are you crazy? Air Canada has contacted me twice before to get photos with the promise of credit & I declined. Most recently, I decided to flip the script when I got a message from an Air Canada marketing rep who was interested in this red snapper ceviche photo for an upcoming spread. I’ll stop here & let the email conversation take over. And yes, I’m still laughing!!!!!

In The Mood

The other day I received some feedback for something that I did recently. Not really a big deal because I always welcome feedback, but this feedback went in the wrong direction!  Everyone knows that good feedback should be thought out, concise, and constructive. The feedback that I received was nothing that I just noted and it blew me out. Actually I was hurt. I slipped into a self-doubting mode and it lasted quite a while. I was so done that I called Cousin Dee so that she could talk me down and help get my mind right. In the usual fashion, she made me laugh about it during the entire conversation, but every now and then, I would slip into that zone that prompted me to call her in the first place. By the end of the conversation I was good and moving on thinking that I can only do what I do; nothing else. I’m hired because people like my style and the quality of work that I produce and of course everyone loves my winning personality. I’m not gloating but it is what it is. So yesterday, I reviewed some information that got me feeling some kind of way again then I just had to throw my hands up like for real. I cannot win them all. No one can. Last night, I thought about my reaction and realized that I let someone get the best of me over something that boiled down to bullshit. My assessment led me to realize that... I’m an artist, and I’m sensitive about MY shit! On another note: - I’m done with my winter semester with two classes knocked out. The end of the tunnel is 1 year away! This time next year, I’ll be inviting you to my graduation ceremony… I’m so looking forward to being down with this chapter of my life! - I thoroughly enjoyed the 1st installment of the PBS series "Black in Latin America." - My hair looks like a hot mess, but not in this photo that was taken by my friend Shades. It's a hot mess in real life. Cannot wait to get it 'did' Saturday!

Hate Looks Like This

I met Damian Furtch last month in New York while I was at that Patricia Field party that I posted about recently. When he saw my camera, he asked if I could take a photo of him and his friends. Then next thing I know, he asking me to take all these other photos. Jokingly, I said "this is not a photo shoot,"  but he was cool. After I took some shots, he asked for my card so that he could follow up. Days later, he reached out to me via Facebook for the photos so I hooked him up. At the same party that I met Damian, I also met Manila Luzon who posted on Facebook last night that Damian was attacked in New York because he was gay. I was like damn! When I read the story, I was just like WTF! Where does this hate come from?
“26 year old Damian Furtch was on his way home from work at a restaurant late Sat night (Sunday morning), when he stopped off at a McDonalds in NYC’s West Village ( a predominantly gay area) to get some food. It was approx. 4:30 am. While inside the restaurant Damian noticed 2 men staring at him – giving him “looks” – we have all been there, we know what this feels like. It was late, Damian was tired, he felt uncomfortable and he didn’t want any trouble so he left. He was across the street, walking away while on the phone to a friend when the 2 men from McDonalds approached him and asked him “if he had a problem” before he knew it he was punched in the face by one man, then instantly felt another punch by the second perp, and then he heard it – “You Fucking Faggot”, the words as hurtful as the punches. Damian managed to get away – but not before suffering a severe beating to his face – and head to the nearest hospital where the police were called. He filed a police report and the cops appropriately asked him if they used any slurs. Damian said yes “they called me a faggot.” Now these 2 thugs are wanted in connection to a HATE crime. Damian got 4 stitches and they have to break and re-set his nose. One of the perps has a huge tattoo of a gothic cross under his left eye..it was approximately 2 inches…Damian will be going to the precinct to go through mug shots and the police have subpoenaed the video surveillance tape from McDonalds.” (Source)
I don’t know Damian, but when I photograph people, I feel connected to them in a way and more often than not, their stories interest me. I hope that he heals from these physical wounds soon, while working through the emotional scars. This world can be fucked up and sometimes I struggle to understand hate. It makes no since to me for anyone to consciously put that much energy behind something causes harm to others on any level.
