Autumn Leaves

Author: Tafari, Friday, October 25th, 2013 at 2:29 PM Mindspill

The vision of autumn leaves take me back to my childhood where my aunts would take my brother, cousin & I on little expeditions to collect leaves in our neighbor on cold weekend days. After collecting bags of all kinds of leaves, we would go home to make glue from a mixture of water & flour, which was used to glue the brightly colored leaves to construction paper. Then we'd ask our grandmother whose looked best. She would always say that they were equally nice. I know deep down, she was afraid to tell the other 2 that mine looked best. Such a fond memory. These days, fallen autumn leaves also remind me of the old jazz standard "Autumn Leaves" or "Les feuilles mortes" if you're fancy. My favorite rendition is performed by Ledisi from her 2002 "Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue" album.
"The falling leaves drift by the window The autumn leaves of red and gold I see your lips, the summer kisses The sun-burned hands I used to hold Since you went away the days grow long And soon I'll hear old winter's song But I miss you most of all my darling When autumn leaves start to fall "

Baseball & Good Times

Author: Tafari, Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013 at 7:18 PM Mindspill

It’s a total bummer that the Detroit Tigers didn’t make it to the World Series this year after being shut down by the Boston Red Sox during the American League Championship Series. Although the loss was a let down, the season was great and I had some great experiences this summer. From hanging downtown on opening day with my boo. Mindspill

To working with and kicking it with Austin Jackson. An awesome experience. To hanging with my homeboys on my birthday at one of the last games of the season that helped land the Tigers in the ALCS. It was all good. Mindspill

Already looking forward to next year and more good baseball!

To Tafari…

Author: Tafari, Friday, August 23rd, 2013 at 1:27 PM Mindspill

Wednesday, I was having a pretty good but busy day.  After the 9-5, I hit the gym to relieve stress and continue my workout plan…  I’m almost at my 2nd weight loss target of losing 15lbs before my birthday. Just 3lbs shy and I have 3 weeks before the big day! While I was between sets, I decided to take a mini break and check my Facebook. Soon as the app opened, I saw a post from Sava’s Restaurant, one of my favorite places in town! They have one of the best happy hours around and the bar staff are like friends, but friends who know how to craft a really good cocktail (especially Chapin & Lerone)! And I won’t even go into how awesome their Bacon Brie Burger is….. Anyway, as you see from the screen shot above, the post the other night was announcing a new drink special named after me.  I had to read it a couple times because I was like what??? This small bit of news was a cool boost for the day.  I requested this drink the 1st time I visited Sava’s and it has been on since then. The “To Tafari” is Hennessy, Domaine De Canton (ginger liqueur), ginger beer and lemon. I had no plans to have a cocktail out this week but I could not resist after seeing this. How could I? As soon as I walked into the restaurant, I was greeted in the best way. And apparently, the drink was selling well. It was so funny & a great way to end my evening! On my Facebook page, I posted this: “Now that I've been featured in the New York Times as a style icon, had a drink named after me in a celebrated restaurant in Ann Arbor, I'm not sure what to do with myself.” The responses were hilarious to say the least.

Dancing Feels Like

Author: Tafari, Monday, March 4th, 2013 at 8:54 PM Mindspill

Dancing is my favorite form of stress release and this weekend, I danced like no one was looking and got my life right. —————————
"Sometime I disappear, I'm not in the room anymore. Most of the time I look at the floor, I don't want to make eye contact with anybody. I only see me. They only see me. So, we're all looking at the same thing. I can tell when I'm doing just the right thing to get the room just the right way; when the room is doing just the right thing to me to get me the right way. But it's never really me. I feel like I'm in a million places at once. Like I'm dancing with everybody that's there. That's why I like to dance by myself."

Working [it] In New York

Author: Tafari, Thursday, February 14th, 2013 at 9:31 PM Mindspill

Last weekend, I was in NYC for Fashion Week working as a fashion liaison. I attended some shows, went back stage, did some art gallery tours, chilled out at the Hotel Chelsea in a SUPER swanky room that rocked my world & such. This was the 1st time that I did not attend as a photographer and it was REFRESHING! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my experience photographing runway shows and presentations from some of America's top designers but the work is killer! You’re left drained by the end of the week feeling like you're near death... It would take me a day or two to recover; feet, back, mind… Who knows what the next season will have in store for me. Guess we will see. The image above is from Libertine's 2013 fall/winter collection & taken with my trusty iPhone! You can see looks from the show here. If you don't follow me on Facebook, you can go there to "like" me & catch up on some of my mini-adventures.

DC Bound

Author: Tafari, Friday, January 18th, 2013 at 6:18 PM Mindspill

The day after the 2012 presidential election, I excitedly contacted my Congressman, John Dingell to request tickets for Barack Obama’s inauguration. Earlier today, I got a call informing me that my request was granted! I was totally excited to have scored tickets to the inauguration again. This is going to be such a grand occasion. Barack Obama is making history and it seems like all of the stars are aligned for him on Jan 21, 2013. This is happening on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it’s 150 years post the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, and I'll be taking this all in with some of my closest friends. Many have said to me “can’t wait to see pictures.” Truth be told, I’m not even sure if I will be snapping photos. I just want to enjoy myself and take in the moments as they come without lugging a camera and lenses. I may change my mind but no promises. The best way to see what I’m seeing and experiencing is to follow me on Twitter like Congressman John Dingell. If you’re in DC holla at your boy!

2012 Election Day: The End is Here

Author: Tafari, Tuesday, November 6th, 2012 at 6:08 PM Mindspill

I’ve been waiting on this day to come and go as soon as the campaign season started. Elections are draining! During the 2008 election... I was all in, blogging, working for the Obama campaign, registering voters, working the phone banks and all. By the time Election Day came, I needed a two week nap! This time around, I just watched from the sidelines. I really didn’t have all of that energy & time. I even avoided political news coverage as much as I could but it found its way into my life. I guess there really is no place to hide. This morning, I actually woke up energized and excited. Made it to my polling place and the entire process only took 35 minutes. Got to work & couldn’t concentrate. Maybe it was the excitement… Whatever the case, I later made my way to the Obama's Ypsilanti campaign office and found people still busy working the phone banks, canvassing and even giving rides. Such great energy  & a few people even remembered me from volunteering 4 years ago… Now? Preparing for friends to visit & nervously wait for election results to pour in with fancy snacks end exotic libations. You can see photos from my Election Day here.

It Has Begun: New York Fashion Week

Author: Tafari, Thursday, September 6th, 2012 at 10:30 AM Mindspill

My bags are packed, camera batteries are charged and my rolls of film are set as I make my way to New York for Fashion Week. I'll be back on the scene making things happen one photo and one story at a time. For this current season, I will not be focusing on the shows inside of the tents as I turn my attention to the show outside. By that, I mean, the fashionable people on the streets of New York. I will be updating on Twitter and Facebook along the way, so be sure to check out the adventure!
